Senior Vice President of Programs
In his role, Joe provides leadership in coordinating AFC’s work to provide those living with, affected by or at risk for contracting HIV/AIDS with innovate and effective housing, care, prevention programs.
Joe has extensive direct service and management experience within the HIV/AIDS sector local, national and international levels.
Prior to joining the staff of AFC, he worked at Howard Brown Health Center (HBHC) for over a decade, serving for five years as the inaugural Director of the Broadway Youth Center before taking on the leadership position of Vice President of Community Health Programs. His other experience includes serving as the HIV Prevention Coordinator at Aunt Martha’s Youth Service Center and as Program Manager for the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN).
Joe completed his Master of Social Work degree at the University of Illinois Chicago’s Jane Addams College of Social Work with a focus in community-level interventions and administration. He also graduated from DePaul University’s Public Health Boot Camp, a collaboration with AFC.
Joe has been widely recognized for his many accomplishments and commitment to the community. He was the 2003 recipient of About Face Theatre’s Michael Leppen Community Leader Award, named one of “Chicago’s 30 Under 30” by Windy City Times, and was selected by the Community Renewal Society for its Community Leadership Award. In 2010 he received the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Community Health Leader Award for his work on behalf of LGBT youth experiencing homelessness.
Joe’s personal commitment has also led to him completing one marathon and two triathlons as a member of the Team To End AIDS (T2).
