National News

The AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC) proudly partners with AIDS advocates statewide and a number of national organizations to collectively advocate on behalf of the HIV prevention and care needs of our state and nation. While based in Chicago, AFC's efforts to increase access to prevention and care services in Illinois are advanced thanks to our active Statewide Advocacy Network, with members in every part of the state, and members of the Illinois Alliance for Sound AIDS Policy (IL ASAP), with local HIV advocacy leaders across Illinois.

Our federal work involves regular communication with members of Congress, particularly members of the Illinois congressional delegation, regarding HIV/AIDS specific issues, monitoring funding for federal programs that impact the lives of people with and at risk for HIV/AIDS, and advocacy on behalf of federal policies (such as the Ryan White Care Act, the National HIV/AIDS Strategy, and national healthcare reform) needed to end the HIV pandemic.  Learn how to become involved in our current advocacy efforts here.

AFC Statement on Federal Funding Ban for Syringe Exchanges PDF Print
Monday, December 19, 2011

On Friday, December 16, Congress sent President Obama the final fiscal year 2012 appropriations bill, which reinstates a prohibition on using federal funding to support syringe exchanges. We implore President Obama to condemn the federal funding ban in the strongest language possible and begin working immediately for its repeal.

“Reinstating the ban on federal syringe exchange funding is a terrible setback and a clear rejection of science and human rights,” said David Ernesto Munar, president/CEO of AIDS Foundation of Chicago. “The debate about needle exchanges was settled in 2009. Congress and the President are reversing a major public health gain at a time in the AIDS epidemic when we cannot afford to take steps backward.”

Engaging the Illinois Congressional delegation to support HIV/AIDS programming despite looming budget challenges PDF Print
Wednesday, June 08, 2011

By Keith R. Green, MSW

I recently spent some time on the Capitol Hill for the first time in my new position as director of federal affairs for the AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC). With Congress in the midst of one of the most heated budget debates of my generation, and the health care safety net for our most disadvantaged citizens on the chopping block to balance the budget, I was in no way confused about the political climate (or rather storm) that I was walking into.
