Unquestionably, the only way to end the AIDS epidemic in our lifetime is to make and sustain adequate investment in HIV prevention research and programs. Advocacy is needed to highlight racial and ethnic disparities, showcase promising and effective programs, and make the case for increased investment. In addition, AFC promotes the expansion of structural interventions such as housing for people with HIV that improve individual’s health and lives while reducing likelihood that they will engage in activities that may result in HIV transmission.

ATLANTA, August 16, 2011 – Just months after an AIDS drug demonstrated reasonable efficacy in preventing HIV infection in controlled clinical trials, seven leading AIDS organizations are urging the U.S. government to act quickly to determine if the results could translate to the real world. Today, at an HIV prevention meeting hosted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the coalition of AIDS advocates called on officials from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to address the shortage of funding and coordination around a new prevention approach known as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).

Exactly one week before the annual commemoration of National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, the feminist blog Jezebel responded with intense skepticism to the USA Today headline claiming that female condoms (FCs) are gaining broader acceptance in U.S. cities. Citing the experience of one woman who did not enjoy using FCs and had difficulty locating them, the blogger casts them as nothing but a “sad sack of contraception options.” Several readers’ comments belittled the safer sex tool as novelty or a joke and questioned why anyone would use it. While such mockery of the female condom is not uncommon, it is particularly disappointing when dismissed by those who purportedly support the reproductive health and rights of women and girls.
