The AIDS Foundation
of Chicago (AFC) is pleased to announce that community activist George Martinez
will be honored as the 2005 recipient of the newly created Mary Dixon AIDS
Advocacy Award in Springfield on Tuesday, April 12 as part of Lobby Days.
The award is named after longtime AFC friend, colleague, and mentor Mary
Dixon who is the legislative director of the Illinois chapter of the American
Civil Liberties Union.
For the past 13 years, Dixon has supported the development of AFC’s
state advocacy program, providing invaluable stewardship, mentoring, and
support to Illinois AIDS advocates. Dixon is credited with training more
than six AFC employees in state legislative affairs in her tenure. The newly
established Mary Dixon AIDS Advocacy Award will recognize an individual
who shares Dixon’s outstanding commitment to social justice and sound
public policy for those living with and at risk for HIV/AIDS.
An outstanding advocate, Martinez was instrumental in helping pass landmark
legislation to expand organ transplant options for people with HIV/AIDS.
The bill, led by Rep. Larry McKeon (D-Chicago), was signed into law by Gov.
Rod Blagojevich on July 15, 2004. Martinez is currently working on efforts
to increase awareness, education, and services for people impacted by hepatitis
A, B, and C.
Dixon will join Martinez for the awards ceremony at the legislative reception
on Tuesday, April 12, co-sponsored by the Phoenix Center of Springfield.
