Meet Charles
Charles is a 35 year old man who recently discovered his HIV positive status. He got tested after learning that he was at a high risk because of his heroin abuse. He was using needles and rarely used clean ones.
In and out of recovery, Charles finally bit the bullet and decided to get clean for good. He chose a treatment center and had an excellent substance abuse counselor who understood his HIV risk and encouraged him to get tested. Charles knew about AIDS, of course, but it took him a while after he had gotten clean to get an HIV test.
Once he was diagnosed, he knew it was time to get treated and he learned about the medications. He understood the drugs had side effects and difficult dosing schedules. One of his friends in the treatment center had made a big change in his life by going on the meds and encouraged Charles to get started on his HIV treatment.
