What Is the Housing and Health Study?

About the Study: The Housing and Health Study (H&H) is a multi-site, multi-agency research project that examines the impact of stable housing on the health outcomes and risk-taking behaviors of HIV-positive homeless people.

Findings from this project will help service providers and policymakers develop housing programs and policies that further prevent the spread of HIV and improve the health of people living with HIV who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Preliminary results of the research will be released in late 2006 with the complete research findings to be published in mid-2007.

Eligibility Requirements: The study is currently closed.

Background: After participating in a random lottery drawing, a total of 105 participants received a housing voucher while another 105 participants were referred to a case manager and a HOPWA Housing Advocate. H&H case managers and housing advocates helped participants who received a voucher to research, locate, secure, and maintain an apartment unit as well as provided links to prevention and care services.

Participants in both the study and control groups were encouraged to participate in three research interviews once every six months between January 2005 to June 2006. All study participants were interviewed about their health, health risk behaviors, and the medical and social services they received.

At the study’s end on June 30, 2006, 95 participants who received a voucher were housed throughout the Chicago metropolitan area. 93 participants were housed at least twelve months.

Partner Agencies: The project is a collaboration between federal and local government agencies, universities, and private not-for-profit agencies; Baltimore and Los Angeles also have H&H sites. Funding has been provided by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
