Global AIDS Initiative Grants $35,000 to Local Agencies

At the 2007 World of Chocolate Kick-Off Party, AFC announced the recipients of the third-annual Global AIDS Initiative. This grantmaking program benefits local, community-based organizations that collaborate or partner with an international organization to conduct global HIV prevention, advocacy, or treatment programs. AFC held a competitive submission process, and the following seven agencies were chosen to receive grant awards.

2007 Global AIDS Initiative Recipients

Women’s Equity for Access to Care and Treatment for HIV (WE-ACTx)

WE-ACTx was awarded $5,000 to support their new Rwandan Adolescents HIV project which includes a weekly teen support group and literacy training.

Martin Temple AME Zion Church

Martin Temple AME Zion Church was awarded $5,000 to support the purchasing of HIV testing materials and services; continued employment of a nurse and clinic supplies; and educational material for the Maoni orphanage located in Lunzu, Malawi in Central Africa.

Salud Latina/Latino Health

Salud Latina/Latino Health was awarded $5,000 to support training leaders in a community-based setting in El Salvador. This year's project will focus on establishing relationships with service providers, capacity building trainings, and staff training in a community planning model.

IEAC HIV/AIDS Working Group

Institute for East African Collaboration (IEAC) was awarded $5,000 to support a collaboration focused on supporting six HIV/AIDS related programs in Thigo and food, blankets, and raincoats for participants and their families.

The Children's Place Association

The Children's Place Association was awarded $5,000 to support a new project in northern Haiti assisting children affected by HIV/AIDS in partnership with four community-based organizations.

Global Alliance for Africa

The Global Alliance for Africa was awarded $5,000 to assist in the construction of a nine-room clinic in Kenya's Kibira slum.

World Bicycle Relief

World Bicycle Relief was awarded $5,000 to provide bicycles for Zambian volunteer heathcare workers to help increase the amount of HIV/AIDS patients they are able to visit, better the level of care provided, and increase self-sufficiency by training villagers in bicycle mechanics.
