Special Initiatives

Within the AIDS Foundation of Chicago's general grantmaking cycle, we fund seventeen special initiatives geared toward building capacity at agencies and communities at the frontlines of the epidemic. Those initiatives are:

  • A Call to Action: HIV/AIDS in Illinois' Latino Community:
In 2007, AFC awarded a special one-time grant to the Greater Humboldt Park Community of Wellness for the development of a report on HIV/AIDS among Latino/as in Illinois.  Publicly released on National Latino AIDS Awareness Day, October 15, 2007, the “Call to Action” is expected to energize efforts against HIV/AIDS within the Latino community.

  • African American Housing and Health Collaborative:
AFC is funding a collaboration among seven partner organizations to mutually strengthen service capacity and infrastructure. The collaborative partners are: Bridging the Tys to Jordan, Christian Community Health Center, Community Supportive Living Systems, Jo-Ray House, New Phoenix Assistance Center, South Side Help Center, and Universal Family Connection.

  • Emergency Fund:
Through a grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, AFC is able to support emergency housing assistance for people living with HIV. Partner organizations are: Agape Missions, BEHIV, Chicago House, Christian Community Health Center, Heartland Alliance, Interfaith House, South Side Help Center, and Vital Bridges.

  • Food and Nutrition Advocacy Partnership:
AFC is leading a coalition, funded by the Altria Group, Inc., to help improve access to food and nutritional services among people with HIV and other chronic medical condition. The partnership includes: Catholic Charities of Lake County, Greater Chicago Food Depository, Health & Disability Advocates, Illinois Hunger Coalition, People’s Resource Center, and Vital Bridges.

  • Great Lakes AIDS Policy Connection/Broadway Cares:
With generous support from Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, AFC is working to increase HIV/AIDS public policy and advocacy infrastructure across the Midwest with small grants to the following groups: AIDS Partnership of Michigan, AIDS Task Force of Greater Cleveland, Community HIV/Hepatitis Advocates of Iowa Network, Indiana Minority Health Coalition, Minnesota AIDS Project, and Wisconsin AIDS Network.

  • Harm Reduction Services Initiative:
Thanks to a grant from the Illinois Department of Public Health, AFC supports critical harm reduction services for injection drug users at the following six agencies: Carepoint Adult, Child & Family Association, Chicago Recovery Alliance, LifeGuard, Sisters and Brothers Helping Each Other, Total Health Awareness Team, and UIC Community Outreach Intervention Project.

  • Illinois Syringe Access Fund:
Thanks to the Syringe Access Fund, AFC is helping increase community awareness and support for science-based HIV prevention strategies through this innovative education and community mobilization project. AFC’s partner on the project is LifeGuard.

  • Project CRYSP:
Project Crystal Prevention (CRYSP) seeks to promote health and wellness in Chicago's gay community. Specifcally, Project CRYSP will address crystal methamphetamine use as a contributing factor for HIV transmission, the abuse of other substances, and mental health concerns among gay men. Funded by the Chicago Department of Public Health, the five-year special project of innovative significance, led by AFC, supports activities at the Center on Halsted, Howard Brown Health Center, and Test Positive Aware Network.

  • Supportive Housing Initiatives:
With generous support from the Chicago Tribune Charities-Holiday (a fund of the McCormick Tribune Foundation), the Polk Bros. Foundation, and the VNA Foundation, AFC supports housing initiatives for individuals living with HIV. Funded parnters include: BEHIV, Chicago House, Christian Community Health Center, Interfaith House, and South Side Help Center.
