AIDS Groups Respond to New CDC Guidelines
SEPTEMBER 2006-On September 21, 2006, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) unveiled new HIV testing guidelines, recommending healthcare settings routinely offer all patients ages 13- 64 voluntary HIV testing. AIDS organizations nationwide have had mixed responses to the new guidelines. Of particular concern to AIDS advocates, CDC recommends testing be conducted without pre-test counseling or separate, informed consent. Working with other AIDS organizations across the country, the AIDS Foundation of Chicago has prepared a written response to the new guidelines, which highlights the importance of pre-test counseling and informed, written consent to testing.
