Today, with a vote of 218-214, the Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives passed the Republican-controlled U.S. Senate’s version of the Budget Reconciliation bill, taking the final step in President Trump’s agenda to terminate healthcare for 17 Million people, all in order to provide tax cuts for those who don’t need them, corporations and the ultra-wealthy. The bill now moves to the President’s desk, where he is expected to sign it prior to the July 4th holiday.

The Republican-controlled Congress and President Trump have spent the past six months pushing a healthcare agenda through the Budget Reconciliation bill designed to literally take away healthcare from millions of Americans – by gutting Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act – to further line the pockets of corporations and the ultra-wealthy. The pain and suffering their votes inflict will be vast and devastating, setting our country’s progress in healthcare access, affordability, and quality back decades. For people living with HIV in Illinois – 41% of whom are on Medicaid – the bill’s passage means losing access to lifesaving treatment, comprehensive health care for other chronic conditions, mental health care, and substance use treatment services.

The Republicans in Congress and the Trump Administration, whose votes and actions over the past six months will directly cause preventable disease and death, must face accountability. Join AFC in calling to share your disgust and outrage with the three members of Congress who represent Illinois and voted in support of these Medicaid and ACA cuts: Representative Darin LaHood, Representative Mike Bost and Representative Mary Miller, whose contact information is listed below.

To Reps. LaHood, Bost, and Miller – know that we will not soon forget how you have betrayed Illinoisians on this day, and we will continue to organize, advocate, and fight against your agenda to enrich billionaires at the expense of our health. There are two dozen billionaires in Illinois, and 3.4 million people on Medicaid in Illinois. We know whose side we are on.

All power to the people!
