Three HIV advocates connected to the AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC) were recently honored at the annual Windy City Times “30 Under 30” awards.

Each year, the honor is given to 30 people (LGBT and allies) under the age of 30 who “have made some substantial contributions to the LGBT community, whether in the fields of entertainment, politics, health, activism, academics, sports or other areas.”

Jim Merrell (at right), AFC’s national coalition development coordinator, was honored for his tireless advocacy work and passion for HIV social justice issues. Merrell coordinates national efforts for the HIV Prevention Justice Alliance, a coalition of advocates and organizations that fights the many injustices often besetting people living with HIV.

Donté Smith, a member of AFC’s AmeriCorps team, and Ryan Hart, who serves on AFC’s housing advisory council, were also honored.
