Staying Visible: Reflections for Transgender day of Remembrance

“We have to do it because we can no longer stay invisible. We have to be visible. We should not be ashamed of who we are. We have to show the world that we are numerous. There are many of us out there.” — Sylvia Rivera
November is Transgender Awareness Month and includes a week (November 13-20) where transgender people and their allies honor the lives of transgender individuals and share transgender people’s stories, experiences, and contributions toward liberation movements. The week culminates on November 20, Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR), which is an annual observance honoring the memory of transgender individuals whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence.
Given these recent years of legislative attacks on the transgender community (and especially trans youth) across the country, and the fear and uncertainty surrounding this year’s election results, it is even more important that we observe Transgender Awareness Month and support our transgender siblings year-round.
AFC’s Gender Euphoria Employee Resource Group would like to honor the lives of trans individuals still living and fighting for trans rights, trans individuals who have passed and are still remembered, and the Black and Brown trans individuals past and present who have paved the way for our communities’ liberation. We would especially like to highlight Bay Davis, a poet and trans activist whose spoken word piece at Elevate Prize Foundation’s Make Good Famous Summit speaks strongly to the experiences, power and legacy of trans women and communities across the country.
